Los Alamos, California

Los Alamos is located 45 miles north of Santa Barbara. This charming little town has become a destination for visitors who appreciate wine, food, art, and antiques. Everywhere you go, you are struck by how friendly everyone is.

Bedford Winery

It's easy to find your way around the town. There's a single street in the business district and it's the one you drive in on from Hwy. 101. We visited recently while wine tasting throughout the Santa Barbara area.

Our first stop was Bedford Winery where we visited with Stephan Bedford. Both the conversation and the wines were great and we walked away with some fabulous wines including a dry Gewurtraminer.

Our next stop was Casa Dumetz, owned by actor and director, Emilio Estevez and his fiancee Sonja Magdevsk, who is also the wine maker. They use grapes grown at their Malibu estate as well as grapes from throughout the Santa Ynez Valley.

We loved the wines and the friendly charm of the tasting room hostess, Chloe. They host a speaker series on Friday evenings on a variety of different topics and everyone is invited to join in.

We spent the night at the Victorian Mansion. This unique bed and breakfast offers six themed rooms. After we checked in, the hostess, Denise gave us a tour of the inn so we got to see all of the rooms.

We stayed in the Roman Suite where we slept in a chariot and stepped up into a huge soaking tub to relax our worries away. The attention to detail was amazing!

Next time, we want to try the 50s Suite, which features a 1956 Cadillac convertible parked at a romantic drive-in movie. There are neon lights, a mood-setting snack bar mural, inviting fireplace and private hot tub. A fun blast to the past!

If you visit, be sure to dine at Full of Life Flatbread. The flatbread pizzas are cooked in a wood-fired oven using local woods and local, seasonal ingredients. They have specialty pizzas as well as entrees that change weekly. The food is sensational. Leave room for dessert. Our favorite is the s'mores, homemade marshmallow oven-roasted atop Chocolate Espresso Cookies with Chocolate Sauce.

There are a number of other restaurants that locals recommend. You'll also find interesting art and antique shops to browse. Park your car on Bell Street to explore Los Alamos on foot!
