John Muir National Monument

John Muir National Monument

John Muir National Monument is located just 12 miles north of San Francisco in Marin County. Experience an old growth coastal redwood forest with a hike through these majestic redwoods.

You'll love this beautiful park with its amazing trees. Start with the half-mile loop as you enter the park. There's also a one-hour and a 90 minute loop.

If you'd like to enjoy some solitude, take a longer hike for some uncrowded time in this beautiful forest. Longer hikes connect with Mt. Tamalpais State Park trails.

Information on these hikes is available at the Visitors Center.

redwood forest

Muir Woods was declared a national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. It's a unique setting. Coastal Redwoods only exist along a narrow stretch of coastline from northern California and into southern Oregon. The redwoods strive in this cool, moist climate.

Many animals live in this redwood forest. The park is home to deer, chipmunks, banana slugs, bobcats, skunks, snakes, racoons, coyotes, fish, birds, otters, and many more wildlife.
