John Muir National Monument is located just 12 miles north of San Francisco in Marin County. Experience an old growth coastal redwood forest with a hike through these majestic redwoods.
You'll love this beautiful park with its amazing trees. Start with the half-mile loop as you enter the park. There's also a one-hour and a 90 minute loop.
Muir Woods was declared a national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. It's a unique setting. Coastal Redwoods only exist along a narrow stretch of coastline from northern California and into southern Oregon. The redwoods strive in this cool, moist climate.
Many animals live in this redwood forest. The park is home to deer, chipmunks, banana slugs, bobcats, skunks, snakes, racoons, coyotes, fish, birds, otters, and many more wildlife.
Bring your camera as you will be impressed by the trees and the views. An day in the forest is awe-inspiring. Along with the Visitors Center, the park has a cafe where you can enjoy a meal and bathrooms are available as well.
Finding a space in the parking lot can be a challenge; especially on summer weekends. Marin Transit offers a shuttle during the summer months. For more info, click here.
