Oceano DunesOceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area was formerly known as the Pismo Dunes. This 1500 acre outdoor playground is a unique place where you can explore the dunes on your own ATV, sign up for a tour with an experienced driver, or rent an ATV and explore on your own. However you chose to enjoy these unique dunes, you will have the time of your life!
In addition to riding off-highway vehicles on the beach and in the dunes, visitors can enjoy camping on the beach. You can drive your own vehicle on the beach though four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. For camping reservation contact (800) 444-7275. Swimming, surfing, surf fishing, hiking, and bird watching are other popular activities. You will find the Audubon warbler, red-tailed hawks, American kestrels, and many shorebirds. The threatened snowy plover and the endangered California least tern nest with the dunes. During the breeding season, March 1 through September 30, you will find small fenced enclosures built around their nests to protect these birds and their offspring. Clamming is permitted on the beach from sunrise to sunset. However, clammers must have a fishing license and a measuring device in their possession, Clams must be at 4 1/2 inches in length and the limit is 10 Pismo clams.
