Amador County Wineries

Amador County wineries are usually small and family-owned. You are sure to enjoy a California wine tour to this area of the Sierra Foothills. The owners not only make the wine, but will often greet you in the wine tasting rooms. The majority of Amador wineries are in the northern part of the county in the Shenandoah Valley near the small town of Plymouth. This is a beautiful area in which to go wine tasting.

Amador County has a high percentage of old Zinfandel vines. Some of the Zinfandel vineyards in this county are more than 125 years old. These old vines produce intense flavors allowing winemakers to make the outstanding Zinfandels for which this area is famous.

Amador County is renowned for its Zinfandel, but you will find excellent wines of many other varietals as well. As you experience your California wine tour, you can’t help but appreciate the warmth and friendliness of the people you meet as you visit the Amador County Wineries.

This region is one of our favorite places to go wine tasting. The wines are superb, the pace is relaxing, and the scenery is spectacular. It's a perfect outing into the Sierra Foothills.

There’s a beautiful view of the Sierra foothills. You will probably be served by the owner, who is friendly and knowledgeable. This Plymouth winery produces Zinfandels, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Syrah. The Sauvignon Blanc is an award-winning wine and a great value at only $10. Our personal favorite is the Esola Syrah. They have a large tasting room that sells high quality home décor and wine related items. Like its sister winery, Villa Toscano, they always have barrel tasting of wines being sold as futures. This is a small family-run Plymouth winery surrounded with vineyards. This winery produces Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Barbera, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Our personal choice is their Syrah. Charles Spinetta Winery Address: 12557 Steiner Rd., Plymouth, CA 95669 Telephone: (209) 245-3384 Open Mon./Thurs./Fri. 8 AM – 3:30 PM BR>Open weekends 9 AM – 4:30 PM This winery produces Barbera, Chenin Blanc, White Zinfandel,and Black Muscat, Orange Muscat. They have a limited amount of a special Frost Wine made from Chenin Blanc grapes only in 1989, 1996, and 2003. While at this Plymouth winery to taste the fine wines, also visit their wildlife art gallery. Admission is free. The gallery contains 3,000 square feet of paintings, prints, sculptures, and ceramics. Cooper Vineyards Address: 21365 Shenandoah School Rd., Plymouth, CA 95669 Telephone: (916) 278-6264 Open Fri.-Sun. 11 AM – 5 PM This Amador winery produces Barbera, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Primitivo, Roussane, Viognier, and Sangiovese. Deaver Vineyards, Address: 12455 Steiner Rd., Plymouth, CA 95669 Telephone: (209) 245-4099 Open Daily 11 AM – 5 PM This Amador winery is a great place for a picnic. There are picnic tables overlooking a lake with large trees and an expansive lawn area. Next door to the winery is a bed and breakfast, Amador Harvest Inn, operated by the same owners as the winery. We cannot go to Amador County without stopping at Deaver Vineyards to buy some of their wonderful Ports. Taste the Ports and you won’t be able to resist either! This small family winery in Plymouth specializes in Zinfandel, Barbera, and Syrah. Dobra Zemlja Address: 12505 Steiner Rd., Plymouth, CA 95669 Telephone: (209) 245-3183 Open daily 10 AM – 5 PM This small California winery produces Zinfandel, Syrah, Sangiovese, Viognier, and a blend called Mason Ruiz. The white-haired owner from Croatia is pictured on the jugs of Mason Ruiz. This winery is secluded…with tall trees, a pond, and nice picnic area. Our favorite wines at this winery are the Mason Ruiz and the Zinfandel. Domaine de la Terre Rouge & Easton Wines Address: 10801 Dickson Rd., Plymouth, CA 95669 Telephone: (209) 245-3117 Open Friday-Sunday 11 AM – 4 PM The Terre Rouge label specializes in Rhone varietals. The Easton label specializes in traditional California wine varietals. Our favorite wine here is the Terre Rouge, their flag ship wine. A great stop on your Amador County wine tasting trip! We stopped by recently with some friends, Bert and Cindy. We had a good laugh over being greeted by 2 very friendly, nonthreatening dogs named Bert and DeeDee. Bert felt he had to buy some of their wine since they had named their dog after him! Our favorite wine here was their Vino de Mocca, a very interesting dessert wine with definite chocolate and coffee flavors and just a hint of orange. This is a small family-owned winery in Amador County that produces Zinfandel, Italian, and Rhone varietal wines. Call for a wine tasting appointment today! They are noted for their old-vine Zinfandel as well as their Rhone wines. The small wine tasting room is located at the end of a half-mile driveway meandering through the vineyards and oak trees of Amador County. It’s a beautiful view! They specialize in Barbera, Syrah, Zinfandel, and Nebbiolo. We especially enjoy their Barbera and Syrahs. They produce Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandels, Ports, and Sparkling wines. They offer both a peach flavored and an almond flavored Sparkling wine. Our favorite wines here are the Ports. They have some great wines at good prices. One of our favorite wines at Montevina is their 2001 Terra d'Oro SHR Zinfandel. Savor the rich blackberry and plum aromas of this lush Zinfandel, full of rich toasty and fruity flavors. Order this Zinfandel online. This small family-owned winery near Plymouth prides itself on producing handcrafted Amador wines. They specialize in Sauvignon Blanc, Mission, Zinfandel, Barbera, and Syrah. This California winery produces Sauvignon Blanc, Barbera, Syrah, and Zinfandel. If you are a Zin lover, don’t miss a chance to taste their selection. We love all of their wine and the Renwood 2002 Jack Rabbit Flat Zinfandel is one of our favorites. This is a big bold Zinfandel. It's rich in fruit flavors of berries, plums, and cherries. This complex and well balanced Zinfandel is a wine to appreciate. Buy this Zinfandel now. Their fine wines include Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc. Shenandoah Vineyards Address: 12300 Steiner Rd., Plymouth, CA 95669 Telephone: (209) 245-4455 Open daily 10 AM – 5 PM This Amador County winery was established in 1977 by the Sobon family. Their wines are all produced from organically grown grapes. The barrel room boasts an art gallery featuring contemporary art, photography, and ceramics. Sobon Estate Address: 14430 Shenandoah Rd., Plymouth, CA 95669 Telephone: (209) 245-6554 Open daily 9:30 – 5 PM. This is the oldest producing winery in California. Be sure to visit the Shenandoah Valley Museum, which is a free self-guided tour. This is a nicely landscaped winery with shady picnic areas. Our favorite wines here are the Zinfandels. You don’t want to miss the beautiful view of the Consumnes River Canyon. There are picnic tables overlooking the scenic view. This Amador County winery produces Zinfandel, Mission, Chenin Blan, Barbera, and Sangiovese. A great setting in Amador County for wine tasting! Stop by taste 3 wineries in one location. Their wines include Syrah, Barbera, Cabernet, Merlot, Zinfandel, Port, Chardonnay, Muscat, Sparkling Wines, Mourvedre, and Viognier. It’s a lovely Tuscan style tasting room, nicely landscaped with tables for outdoor dining scattered around two ponds with fountains. There’s an excellent bistro to enjoy a tasty lunch of sandwiches, pasta, soups, and salads. The gift shop has some high quality items to purchase for your home. They have many varietals to taste and always have barrel tasting of the futures they are selling by the case. We love the Barbera and Jake’s Old Vine Zinfandel. This is a small, family-owned Amador County winery noted for its Sangiovese wines. They also produce Zinfandel, Barbera, Grappa, and a Moscato called Frivolo. We especially enjoy their Reserva Sangiovese. The Frivolo is a lovely Moscato, light and sweet.
