El Dorado County Wineries produce many award winning wines. If you are thinking of planning a California Wine Tour, this mountain area is a wonderful getaway. Characterized by warm days and cool nights with pleasant breezes from the valley below, this is the perfect wine growing location. It is the ideal place for growing grapes with intense flavor full of character and vibrancy.
 El Dorado County is one of the few wine growing areas of California that contain only mountain vineyards. During a visit to this part of the California wine country Kathy's Aunt Norma, Kathy, and her father, Garland Copeland; enjoyed the spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada mountains and its scenic vineyards, as well many opportunities to taste some world class wines produced by El Dorado County Wineries.
The wineries are scattered around the county but you will find that most of the El Dorado County Wineries are located near the historic towns of Placerville and Fairplay. Wine tasting throughout this county is usually complimentary.

This is one of El Dorado County's mountain wineries that is committed to producing quality wines and grows 90% of its own grapes. They have won numerous awards for their wines including a Double Gold at the California State Fair for both their 2002 Estate Zinfandel and their 2003 Merlot. This small family winery specializes in small batches of quality wine. They have some lovely blends as well as Chardonnay, Grenache Rose, Grenache, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their 2002 El Dorado Cabernet won a Gold Medal at both the Orange County and the El Dorado County Fairs. You don't want to miss the expansive view of the Sierra Foothills from their deck. It's a lovely place to picnic and take in the spectacular scenery while enjoying a California wine tour to the El Dorado County wineries.

Our favorites were the Sangiovese and Port. This winery is beautifully landscaped with a scenic view of a lake, the staff is friendly, and the wine is fabulous.

This El Dorado winery produces a wide variety of wines include Ports, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, blends, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Primitivo, and Grenache. They offer daily tours of the winery and barrel tasting. There is a bistro serving lunch and dinner at the winery as well as a bocce ball court.

This El Dorado County winery specializes in Zinfandels and Rhone varietals. Take in the spectacular views of the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada and the hills below from the top of Mount Aukum. The view alone is worth adding this winery to your California wine tour. However, be sure to taste their wines because they are spectacular as well. When my Aunt Norma was visiting from Arkansas, we enjoyed the White Port at Mount Aukum.

This El Dorado County winery focuses on estate grown Rhone varietals and blends, Cabernet and Syrah blends, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel. The wine tasting room is at an elevation of 2500 surrounded by beautiful scenery amongst the Sierra pines. You will probably be greeted by the winery dog, a friendly lab named Goldie. The owners are very friendly and knowledgable.

Oakstone is an El Dorado County winery that specializes in Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Bordeaux varietals. Two unusual wines you will to taste are their Cabernet Sauvignon Port and the Apple Wine Muscat. Kathy and her Aunt Norma enjoy the mountain grown wines and relax in the scenic surroundings of the Sierra Nevada.

We enjoyed the wines at this mountain winery...especially the Old Vine Zinfandel and the Port. Their wines are cellared in a cave attached to the tasting room. They were having barrel tastings in the cave on the day we visited. Next door is a bistro that's a good stop for lunch or dinner during your California wine tour.

This winery has quickly become known for its great wines and has won many awards. Visit this winery to enjoy the fabulous wines as well as the scenic view of the Apple Hill area.
