Zachary Jacques Restaurant
Zachary Jacques is one of the best places to dine in El Dorado County. After a day spent sampling wine at the many wineries in the area, this restaurant featuring French cuisine is the place to enjoy a marvelously prepared dinner.
The new owners are Chef John Evans and his wife, Lynette Evans. John trained with Chef Mark Hopper of Thomas Keller’s Bouchon in Las Vegas and also worked with Bobby Flay to open the Mesa Grill in Caesars Palace.
The star at Zachary Jacques is, without a doubt, the food. We started out with mushrooms stuffed with spinach, brie, and sun dried tomatoes baked in puff pastry ($9). The flaky pastry went well with the other ingredients.
Steve ordered the Duck Confit ($24) which was served in a sauce made of honey, orange, lavender, and ginger. The duck was moist and so tender that the meat fell off the bone. It was served over white beans and topped with fresh green beans. Everything complemented each other and made for a flavorful, hearty meal.
I ordered the filet of wild salmon ($21) with a brown sugar horseradish glaze. I was a little worried about the glaze as I am not a fan of horseradish. The waitress assured me I wouldn’t taste the horseradish. She was right. It was wonderful. The glaze had a slightly sweet flavor and the salmon was moist and juicy. The salmon was served over mashed potatoes and topped with fresh green beans.
An irresistible dessert tray was brought to our table toward the end of our meal. Everything on the tray looked inviting, but we settled on the Saint Anaray ($6). This is custard, whipping cream, and pastry dessert topped with a caramel glaze. It was large enough to split. The custard was very rich and creamy. The caramel added a nice crunchiness.
The restaurant has a large wine list specializing in local wineries and consistently earns the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its wine list. After a day of tasting many wines, we enjoy a glass of Zin Man Zinfandel by the glass. There are a number of other wines available by the glass as well.
Next time we are in the area, we intend to try out their “Sunday in the Country” brunch is from 10:30-2:00 PM every Saturday and Sunday. This restaurant has a Placerville address but is actually 3 miles east of Diamond Springs. It was convenient for us on our way from wine tasting in Fair Play to Placerville. You might want to call the restaurant for directions.
