Enjoy romantic getaways at Shadowbrook Restaurant. This restaurant in Santa Cruz promises a magical evening with its location along Soquel Creek in the charming seaside town of Capitola-by-the-Sea. Located at the bottom of a beautifully landscaped hill, you can take the small red cable car, or tram, down to the restaurant or walk the garden path lushly lined with waterfalls, ferns, ivy, and other plants. The romantic lighting, dark wood paneling, fire places, elegant table settings, and windows overlooking the creek create an ambiance that is hard to beat.
Shadowbrook was established in 1947 and has won numerous awards for “Most Romantic Restaurant”. It’s a popular place for both weddings and proposals and the staff will help you out with special requests to make your proposal perfect.We have eaten at Shadowbrook many times over the years. It’s the perfect place for relaxing and spending time with the special person in your life. In addition to the restaurant, there is a bar and lounge with live entertainment on weekends. You can also enjoy a drink outside on the patio next to the creek. On our last visit we started out with their famous artichoke soup. Throughout the evening a server walked around with a basket of warm sour dough rolls and soft butter making sure you were supplied with all the bread you want. For dessert Steve tried the Jack Daniel’s Mud Pie, which was coffee crunch ice cream topped with a whiskey-chocolate sauce. It was a large dessert, which we could have shared easily. I chose the chocolate crème brulee. I usually order the traditional vanilla bean crème brulee. While the chocolate was yummy, my favorite is still the vanilla. Santa Cruz is known for its fantastic wineries. Some are located in the city of Santa Cruz, while others are in the scenic Santa Cruz mountains. Plan a wine tasting trip soon. Directions from Highway 1: Exit at 41st Avenue traveling toward the ocean (this is a right turn from Hwy. 1 South or a left turn from Hwy. 1 North). Turn left at the stoplight onto Capitola Rd., ½ of a mile turn left onto Wharf Rd. The restaurant is on the right and the parking lots are on the left.

Steve ordered the Chicken Breast Oscar. It was a boneless breast topped with Dungeness crab meat, avocado, and béarnaise sauce. I decided on Fresh Red Trout Amandine, one of the daily specials. It was pan seared with brown butter. Both dinners were served with fresh vegetables and wild rice pilaf. Everything was delicious.
